This year, vintage clothing was prominent on the red carpet and in celebrity paparazzi photos. Hollywood A-listers proved that a well-cut design can endure the test of time by making vintage clothing feel completely modern, whether or not they were attending a major event.
A few celebrities made vintage fashion their 2022 signature. The black strapless Valentino gown that Zendaya wore to the Emmys and the sculptural, strapless Bob Mackie gown in black and teak (from fall 1998) that she wore to a Time 100 Gala were two of her most memorable outfits.
The model Bella Hadid is a well-known supporter of used clothing; after all, she has been observed browsing Depop. She wore a frothy fall 1986 Chanel gown as well as a white Tom Ford-era Gucci column gown with a hip cutout to the Cannes Film Festival. What do Hadid and Zendaya have in common? Law Roach, who has an eye for vintage finds, styled them both. A great dress is a great dress, regardless of when it was made, Roach said to Vogue last month.
Other famous people were loyal to a specific vintage brand. One person who was fixated on vintage Mugler this year was Kylie Jenner.
She wore a strapless black gown from the designer’s fall 1995 collection, complete with a dramatic headpiece and opera gloves, to the Brooklyn Museum’s opening of a Mugler retrospective last month. While this was going on, Kim Kardashian’s sister experienced a brief Dolce & Gabbana phase. Kim scoured the two designers’ back collections for bodycon dresses and bodysuits while in Italy for Kourtney’s wedding, where the majority of the Kardashian family wore the brand.
Other notable celebrities who embraced secondhand clothing include Amal Clooney, Rihanna, Emily Ratajkowski, and Olivia Rodrigo. Scroll down for an additional 29 of this year’s most memorable vintage fashion moments.
